Bournemouth
and West Hampshire Water - UK Champions

Cascal
owned, BOURNEMOUTH AND WEST HAMPSHIRE WATER (BWHW) are the new champions
of the Institution of Water Officers (IWO) UK Drilling and tapping competition
for 2002. Another
BWHW team finished third.
In
total some 24 teams representing most of the UK water companies competed.
The task is to drill and tap a new service connection into a live pressurised
water main and to assemble a boundary meter box and connecting pipe
in the shortest time - without joints and fittings leaking whilst following
strict safety procedures. The winning time was 2 minutes 22.90 seconds.
The
winning team was from Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water and A H Ball
Partnering a joint venture between BWHW and A H Ball Ltd (a Mowlem Company)
which work together to provide low cost and efficient mains network
maintenance services on BWHW's 3000 KM system. The
winning team consisted of Duncan Sharples (AHB) and Doug White (BWHW).
BWHW's
second team consisted of Pete Haslock (BWHW) and Danny Hunt (AHB). The
team was coached by BWHW's Barrie Light who competed in the competition
himself for ten years until three years ago.
BWHW's
Managing Director, Tony Cooke, who is also National Vice President of
the IWO said "Our group have taken on the best in the industry and come
first and third. At last after ten or more years of coming second or
third we have made it. This is a great achievement for the team and
a real honour for the Company."
The
team will now compete in the World Championships in Anaheim, California
next June. In this competition the UK, Netherlands and American champions
compete. They each have to drill and tap a main to each of the three
national standards with the team having the lowest aggregate time for
the three runs being the winners. (Click
