Water Bosses Hail 'Vintage Year' As Figures Reveal
Company is Second-Best Performing in Industry

Vintage year - Staff at Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water
celebrate being named the second-best performing water company
in England and Wales.

Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water (BWHW) has been named as the second-best performing water company in the country capping what bosses have described as a 'vintage year.'

New figures released by Ofwat reveal that BWHW achieved its best-ever score - 287 out of a maximum of 288 - in the water regulator's annual levels of service performance assessment.

The report assesses the levels of service provided by 22 water companies in England and Wales.

Overall performance is measured by awarding scores in eight service categories.

These range from provision of the water supply to managing leakage and dealing with customer enquiries.

Tony Cooke, BWHW's Managing Director, said: "By any standards, this is a sparkling performance and our best-ever figures.

"Our focus at all times is on customer service and I'm delighted that this has been recognised by our industry regulator."

The Ofwat report caps an impressive year for BWHW which has included producing its best ever water quality performance at 99.99 per cent compliance with all the national and European standards.

The company has also achieved the second largest improvement in efficiency in the industry between 2003/04 and 2006/07.

Other achievements include delivering on target, or ahead of schedule, the work plan agreed with Ofwat when prices were set for the 2005 to 2010 period.

This includes:

  • New disinfection process to reduce chlorine taste and smell
  • Refurbishment of Lymington and Wimborne Treatment Works
  • Meter installations
  • Maintenance of the pipe network
  • Leakage target met again
  • Early completion expected for Longham Reservoirs Scheme

BWHW also avoided placing restrictions on water use, such as hosepipe bans, which affected the South East during the 2006 drought.

Mr Cooke said: "This has been a vintage year for the company and our customers.

"We are delivering everything we said we would as part of the Ofwat 2005-2010 price settlement, and more. Quality and service are amongst the best in the industry and we plan to keep it that way.

"Customers have told us that they trust us to do the right thing and they are very happy with our services."
