THE
DRIEST PLACE ON EARTH - NEW WATER SERVICES

Copper Smelter
Chile
has just seen the opening of Cascal's newest project 35km from Antofagasta
in Northern Chile. The project includes the supply of industrial water
over a 15 year period, approximately 40km of dedicated pipeline and
several pumping stations and reservoirs to elevate the water some 600m
above sea level.
Chile
is dependent on the production of copper as it is its biggest export,
and accounts for 40% of the world's annual output. Cascal's new plant
will provide water to an increasing number of industrial companies in
one of the driest places on earth.
The
main client is Canadian owned, Noranda, who in 1998 purchased a copper
smelter. Significant development in the area occurred when they increased
their investment and expanded production in 2000. This project is backed
by regional authorities who believe that many more companies will wish
to relocate their facilities to the area once there is a water resource
in the sector.
